The Isar origin
The source of the Isar lies at an altitude of 1,162 meters in the Karwendel mountains, in the municipality of Scharnitz in Tyrol, and marks the beginning of one of Bavaria's most important rivers. Here, in a tranquil landscape at the foot of imposing peaks, the water gushes from three karst springs and joins together to form the Isar. The region, also known as “by the rivers”, offers an impressive natural experience that visitors can explore on various trails.
The way to the source of the Isar
The route to the source of the Isar can be covered on foot, by bike or e-bike. The wide Isar cycle path leads through the Hinterautal valley, accompanied by the gentle sound of the Isar. The path is largely flat and is suitable for a leisurely 10-kilometre ride to the source. New information boards, a wonderful rest area and a natural path lead directly to the springs and provide a fascinating view of the crystal-clear water.
Cultural and natural highlights
The source of the Isar is not only a geographical highlight, but also a cultural one. The region around the source, especially the Hinterautal valley, impresses with its varied flora and fauna. Visitors can reach the original Kastenalm, which is surrounded by magnificent maple trees and offers a welcome opportunity to take a break. For photographers and nature lovers, the valley offers excellent opportunities to capture the natural spectacle in pictures.
The area around the source of the Isar
The Karwendel mountain range impresses with its chains of peaks and the variety of spring streams that emerge from the karstic limestone. With around 340 springs, the region is very rich in water, as a layer of clay under the limestone prevents the water from seeping further and pushes it to the surface. The source of the Isar is therefore a fascinating example of the geological processes in the region. The water “matures” in the Karwendel rock for up to 15 years before it rises to the surface again.
The fence and the quiet retreat
A fence protects the young Isar from the dust of mountain bikes and offers a tranquil place to linger. Here, visitors can sit between young birch trees and blueberry bushes and listen to the gentle murmur of the stream. The contrast between the small, gurgling spring and the later course of Bavaria's fourth largest river is impressive.
Practical tips for visitors
To get to the source of the Isar, start at the parking lot at Gasthaus Wiesenhof at the entrance to the Hinterautal valley. The wide cycle path and well-signposted route make the visit easy and enjoyable. If you are planning to stop for a bite to eat, you should plan the extra kilometer to the Kastenalm or bring provisions with you. The source of the Isar thus offers not only a fascinating nature experience, but also an opportunity to relax and enjoy the alpine landscape.
