Castle Neuschwanstein

Neuschwanstein Castle is located in the Bavarian municipality of Schwangau and was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria between 1869 and 1892. The building, which was designed by Eduard Riedel in the neo-Romanesque style, is modelled on medieval knights' castles. Ludwig II did not have the castle built as a centre of power or representation, but as a private retreat, inspired by his admiration for the old German knights' castles. The foundation stone was laid on 5 September 1869 and initial planning began in 1867/1868. Unfortunately, Ludwig II died on 13 June 1886 before the building could be completed.

Architectural highlights

The castle impresses with its three-winged complex and is particularly characterised by the throne room, the bedroom and the singers' hall. These rooms reflect the splendour and unique style of the castle. The architecture and interior design are modelled on the ideals of the Romantic Middle Ages.

Tourism and importance

With around 1.4 million visitors a year, Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most famous sights in Germany. The castle is administered by the Free State of Bavaria and managed by the Bavarian Administration of State Palaces, Gardens and Lakes. The German National Tourist Board has emphasised the castle in international advertising campaigns, and in a survey of foreign visitors it came first as the most popular destination. The castle also achieved high rankings in national surveys.

Visits and guided tours

Visits to the palace are only possible as part of guided tours, which last around 30 minutes in English. After the tour, visitors have the opportunity to experience a free multivision show about King Ludwig II and the history of the palace on the 2nd floor of the palace.
